Kotonoha no Niwa – Rain

Oh when it rains…

This song was originally by Ooe Senri (大江千里) in 1989. It was notably covered by Makihara Noriyuki (槇原敬之) in 1998 – that was the version I listened to while translating this, embedded below – and a new version by Hata Motohiro (秦基博) is to be the ending theme for Kotonoha no Niwa, Shinkai Makoto’s upcoming movie.

Lyrics: Ooe Senri
Composition: Ooe Senri

Incapable of words, frozen in place,
I’d lived gently in front of the eyes of the world.
In order to shift the burden, so crudely,
I embraced you in the rainy night.

The buildings by the road, the broken streetlamps –
At the street corner, everyone was in a rush.
It’s not you; the fault lies with me,
Unable to hide my own intensity.
